BOOK COVERS
This is a book cover from Jennifer Hudson Taylor's new Christian romance novel Highland Sanctuary - a novel to be released fall of 2011.
With traditional publishing, the publishing company chooses a book cover. Sometimes, it may not be to the novelist's liking. Sometimes, the publishing team may give the author a choice between several covers. Have you ever wondered where the publishing companies get these covers with the woman in a long flowing gown and her soon-to-be husband in period clothing?
A book cover of this genre begins with:
1. Research in libraries or perhaps an artist has his/her own research materials.
2. Models are selected
3. Costumes are selected
4. Male costumes are selected
5. The artist explains the job to the models - explains story plot so models have an understanding of how they should pose
6. Directs models in photography shoot
7. Selection of preferred shots
8. Final selection
9. A drawing is made from photograph
10. Painting
For a good visual of this process, visit Elaine Gignilliat's site.
These days, amazing digital artwork can be created and the sky is the limit. So is the price for book covers by top artists. Depending on the artist - whether it's digital or an oil painting, a cover can cost anywhere between $2,000 and $10,000, with most falling in the $4,000 to $5,000 range.
For an example of a digital artist's work visit the site of Australian artist Shanina Conway.
But here are a couple of questions for you: Do you choose a book for its cover? And, do back cover blurbs ruin a book for you? Email your reply to....:vmoss@livingwaterfiction.com
